Cornwall

After spending 10 years in London I decided to move to Carbis Bay in Cornwall.
I have always been enormously interested in Landscape painting. I had been to Cornwall for holidays, in the past and I had painted a number of seascapes over a period of a years. So when I decided to finally take the plunge and move on, Cornwall seemed the perfect choice. As soon as I arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The vistas were stunning and the variety of colours and textures were motivating: The sand dunes, sky, sea and the cliffs were sweets to a child. At first I painted Large scale with copious amounts of paint and texture but soon I began to run out of materials and as I had little income I had to curtail my enthusiasm and work in a more modest size but with moderation came an awareness of why I wanted to be an Artist in the first place. To simply translate what was in front of me through whatever medium was at my disposal. It was through drawing, in graphite, that led me eventually to the beach paintings. When drawing one must extract a tiny sample from a multitude of visual information and this is why line is so effective because it has such an array of visual information, which helps to feed the viewers imagination. I took a parallel approach with the beach paintings. Firstly I decided to keep the colours as simple as possible and the same for the composition: Sky Sea and Sand one stacked upon the other but separated through the weight of the colour keeping the painting as effortless as possible.
